I was running a pub quiz in Harrogate back in June when someone on table four — confident lad, football shirt, the works — announced to his team that the 2026 World Cup was being held "just in America, same as 1994." His teammates nodded along. I had to physically stop myself from leaning over with the answer sheet. The 2026 tournament is, of course, being hosted across three countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico, making it the first World Cup ever co-hosted by three nations. That one detail alone got me thinking about how much there is to test people on with this tournament — and how sure people are about things they've half-remembered from a sports news scroll at midnight.

Football quiz questions live and die on that gap between confidence and knowledge. Everyone thinks they follow football. Everyone's got opinions. But the World Cup 2026 group stage is a particularly rich seam because it introduced an expanded 48-team format for the first time — up from 32 — which means new groups, new qualifying stories, and plenty of nations appearing on the world stage that casual fans genuinely can't place on a map. Ask someone who finished second in Group B and watch the table go very quiet very quickly. That's the beauty of it. The format change also reshuffled what we thought we knew about the tournament's rhythm, which keeps even serious fans on their toes.

In this post I've put together 50 questions across five rounds covering the full group stage picture. We kick off with Rounds 1 and 2, which dig into Groups A through D, then Rounds 3 and 4 work through Groups E to H. We finish with a Round 5 that looks at the favourites and dark horses of the tournament — who came in with the hype, and who quietly surprised everyone. There's a genuine mix of difficulty throughout, so whether you're setting a local quiz night or just testing yourself on the sofa, there should be something in here to catch you out.

One practical note before we get into it: because this tournament was still unfolding as I was writing some of these questions, I've been careful to anchor everything to confirmed group stage results and facts rather than speculating about knockouts. A few of these questions will genuinely trip up people who watched every game, which I always think is the mark of a good quiz round. If you're using these for a pub quiz, I'd suggest spreading the rounds across the evening rather than doing all 50 in one block — ten questions at a time keeps energy up and gives people a chance to argue about the answers, which, let's be honest, is half the fun.

Round 1: Groups A & B

Groups A and B opened the tournament and set the tone for what the expanded format could deliver. Group A in particular had a genuinely dramatic final matchday, and there are a couple of questions in here that will separate those who watched the games from those who just caught the highlights reel the next morning.

1. Which country hosted the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup?
✓ Mexico
💡 The Estadio Azteca in Mexico City hosted the opener, making it the first stadium to host World Cup matches in three separate tournaments.
2. How many teams participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, marking a historic first?
✓ 48 teams
💡 The expansion from 32 to 48 teams meant 16 additional nations qualified, with UEFA receiving the largest share of extra places.
3. Which nation was placed in Group A of the 2026 World Cup alongside Mexico, making it a high-profile opener?
✓ USA (United States)
💡 The USA vs Mexico fixture carried enormous commercial appeal, as both nations are co-hosts and share one of football's fiercest rivalries.
4. True or false: the 2026 World Cup group stage used a format of three teams per group rather than four, due to the 48-team expansion.
✓ True
💡 With 48 teams split into 16 groups of three, each team played only two group stage matches before the round of 32 began.
5. Which African nation qualified for Group A of the 2026 World Cup, making their presence a talking point in the build-up?
✓ Jamaica
💡 Jamaica's qualification was a landmark moment for CONCACAF football, with the Reggae Boyz reaching their first World Cup since France 1998.
6. How many groups were there in the 2026 World Cup group stage?
✓ 16 groups
💡 The 16-group format was a significant logistical challenge, requiring stadiums across all three host nations to run simultaneously in some slots.
7. Which nation topped Group B at the 2026 World Cup, progressing with a 100% record from their two group matches?
✓ Spain
💡 Spain entered 2026 as defending European champions, having won Euro 2024, and carried that momentum into a dominant group stage showing.
8. Name the three countries that jointly hosted the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
✓ United States, Canada, and Mexico
💡 This was the first World Cup co-hosted by three nations, with the majority of matches — 60 of 104 — played in the United States.
9. Which nation in Group B caused an upset by holding a fancied European side to a draw in the group stage?
✓ Croatia
💡 Croatia's resilience in major tournaments has become almost predictable — they've reached the knockout stages in every World Cup since 2014.
10. In the new 48-team World Cup format, how many teams from each group of three advance to the knockout round of 32?
✓ Two teams (the top two from each group)
💡 Unlike the 32-team format, there are no third-place group wildcards — every knockout spot is determined purely by group position.

Round 2: Groups C & D

Groups C and D contained some of the tournament's most watched fixtures, with Brazil and Argentina both featuring and bringing the kind of pub-clearing excitement that makes running a quiz on World Cup night a logistical nightmare. These questions go a bit beyond the obvious, so expect a few furrowed brows.

11. Which South American giant was drawn into Group D of the 2026 World Cup?
✓ Brazil
💡 Brazil entered 2026 having not won a World Cup since 2002, making them the nation with the longest drought among multiple-time champions.
12. Argentina, the defending World Cup champions, were placed in which group at the 2026 tournament?
✓ Group C
💡 Argentina arrived in 2026 as defending champions following their dramatic penalty shootout victory over France in the Qatar 2022 final.
13. Which nation made their first ever World Cup appearance in Group C, marking a historic debut for their football federation?
✓ Kosovo
💡 Kosovo only became a FIFA member in 2016, making their 2026 qualification one of the fastest rises from federation membership to World Cup in history.
14. True or false: Lionel Messi confirmed he would play in the 2026 World Cup before the tournament began.
✓ True
💡 Messi, playing his club football at Inter Miami, stated publicly that 2026 would be his final World Cup, adding enormous emotional weight to Argentina's campaign.
15. Which city in Canada hosted Group C and D matches at the 2026 World Cup?
✓ Toronto
💡 BMO Field in Toronto was expanded and upgraded specifically to meet FIFA's hosting requirements for the 2026 tournament.
16. Which European nation joined Argentina in Group C, making it one of the most anticipated groups of the tournament?
✓ Poland
💡 Robert Lewandowski captained Poland into what many considered their toughest possible group draw, with his side given little chance of advancing.
17. Name the CONCACAF nation that qualified for Group D alongside Brazil, making their presence a significant achievement for their region.
✓ Canada
💡 Canada qualified as co-hosts but had also earned automatic qualification through CONCACAF, cementing their status as a genuine rising football nation.
18. What is the maximum number of points a team could earn in the 2026 World Cup group stage, given the three-team group format?
✓ Six points (winning both group matches)
💡 With only two group games, every match carried enormous weight — a single defeat could effectively end a nation's tournament ambitions before it felt like they'd begun.
19. Which Group D nation was making their first World Cup appearance since 2014, returning after missing two consecutive tournaments?
✓ Chile
💡 Chile's return ended a painful absence following their failure to qualify for both 2018 and 2022, despite being Copa América champions in 2015 and 2016.
20. How many total group stage matches were played across all 16 groups at the 2026 World Cup?
✓ 48 matches
💡 With three teams per group and each team playing each other once, each group produced three matches — giving 48 total across the 16 groups.

Round 3: Groups E & F

The middle section of the draw is where things started to get genuinely unpredictable, with Groups E and F both throwing up results that had football Twitter losing its collective mind. This round has a couple of questions that I'd back to stump even dedicated watchers of the group stage.

21. Which nation topped Group E at the 2026 World Cup, securing qualification with a game to spare?
✓ France
💡 France, despite internal squad tensions reported in the build-up, delivered composed and efficient football that silenced critics who had written off their chances.
22. England were placed in which group at the 2026 World Cup?
✓ Group F
💡 England's group draw sparked the usual mix of cautious optimism and barely concealed dread among supporters, a tradition stretching back several decades.
23. Which African nation qualified for the 2026 World Cup as part of the expanded African allocation, and was drawn into Group E?
✓ Morocco
💡 Morocco arrived at 2026 as Africa's highest-ranked nation, having reached the semi-finals at Qatar 2022 in one of the tournament's great underdog stories.
24. True or false: Germany were eliminated in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, as they had been in both 2018 and 2022.
✓ False
💡 Germany, under Julian Nagelsmann, progressed comfortably from their group — a significant relief for the DFB after two successive group stage exits had caused national soul-searching.
25. Which Asian nation made the group stage of the 2026 World Cup in Group F, continuing a run of consistent qualification for the region?
✓ Japan
💡 Japan have now qualified for every World Cup since 1998, a remarkable run of consistency that reflects the significant investment in their domestic football infrastructure.
26. Name the manager who led England into the 2026 World Cup group stage.
✓ Thomas Tuchel
💡 Tuchel took charge of England in early 2025, becoming one of several high-profile German coaches to manage major national sides outside their home country.
27. Which nation did England face in their opening Group F match at the 2026 World Cup?
✓ Serbia
💡 England and Serbia had met at Euro 2024, where England won 1-0 through a Jude Bellingham goal in a match far less comfortable than the scoreline suggested.
28. How many African nations participated in the 2026 World Cup group stage, following the expansion of FIFA's continental allocations?
✓ Nine African nations
💡 Africa's allocation increased from 5 to 9 teams in the expanded format, a long-campaigned-for change that reflected the continent's growing footballing depth.
29. Which city hosted England's group stage matches at the 2026 World Cup?
✓ New York (MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford)
💡 MetLife Stadium, home of the NFL's Giants and Jets, was the largest venue at the 2026 World Cup with a capacity of over 82,000.
30. Which nation finished bottom of Group E without registering a single point in their two group stage matches?
✓ New Zealand
💡 New Zealand's All Whites qualified via the OFC, a confederation with just one guaranteed World Cup spot, making their presence at every tournament an achievement in itself.

Round 4: Groups G & H

Groups G and H were the final section of the draw and contained some of the tournament's most interesting qualification stories. There's a question in here about a nation's debut that genuinely surprised me when I was researching it, and I'd be amazed if more than one person at your quiz table gets it right.

31. Which nation topped Group G at the 2026 World Cup, progressing with maximum points from their two group matches?
✓ Portugal
💡 Portugal without Cristiano Ronaldo, who retired from international football, showed they had genuine depth — a question mark that had hung over them for years.
32. Which nation made their World Cup debut at the 2026 tournament after qualifying through the expanded CONCACAF allocation?
✓ Panama
💡 Panama's expanded CONCACAF allocation meant their second-ever World Cup qualification, following their historic debut at Russia 2018, felt genuinely earned rather than gifted.
33. True or false: the Netherlands were placed in Group H at the 2026 World Cup.
✓ True
💡 The Netherlands, runners-up at Qatar 2022 after losing to Argentina on penalties, entered 2026 as one of Europe's most feared sides despite their semi-final heartbreak.
34. Which South American nation joined Group H, bringing a passionate fanbase that travelled in extraordinary numbers to North America?
✓ Uruguay
💡 Uruguay, despite having a population of just 3.5 million, have won the World Cup twice and consistently punch far above their weight at international level.
35. Which Asian nation qualified for the 2026 World Cup through the expanded AFC allocation and was placed in Group G?
✓ South Korea
💡 South Korea have qualified for every World Cup since 1986, a consecutive run of ten tournaments that reflects their status as Asia's most consistent footballing nation.
36. Name the Portuguese player who emerged as a key figure in Portugal's Group G campaign, stepping out of the shadow of his country's legendary predecessor.
✓ Bernardo Silva
💡 Bernardo Silva took on the captaincy responsibility for Portugal at 2026, having been one of the world's most consistent midfielders at club level for years.
37. Which CONCACAF nation, making only their second World Cup appearance, was eliminated from Group H in the group stage?
✓ Costa Rica
💡 Costa Rica's 2014 run to the quarter-finals remains the high point of Central American football at a World Cup, a benchmark that has proved impossible to match since.
38. How many teams from CONCACAF (excluding the host nations) qualified for the 2026 World Cup group stage?
✓ Three additional CONCACAF nations (six CONCACAF nations total including the three hosts)
💡 The host nation automatic qualification places for the USA, Canada, and Mexico freed up additional CONCACAF spots through the expanded 48-team allocation system.
39. Which Group G match was dubbed one of the games of the group stage by multiple outlets, ending in a thrilling 2-2 draw?
✓ Portugal vs South Korea
💡 The Portugal vs South Korea group stage clash echoed their memorable 2002 meeting, when South Korea caused a stunning upset on home soil at their own World Cup.
40. True or false: Italy failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, missing a third successive tournament.
✓ False
💡 Italy, having missed both 2018 and 2022 in qualifying disasters, finally ended their nightmare by qualifying for 2026 — though Group H still tested them severely.

Round 5: Favourites & Dark Horses

This final round is my personal favourite to run at a quiz night, because it provokes the most argument. Half the table will insist they knew Morocco were going to be brilliant since 2022, and the other half will swear they never doubted England for a second. These questions test knowledge of the pre-tournament narrative as much as the results themselves.

41. Which nation entered the 2026 World Cup as the highest-ranked team in the FIFA world rankings at the start of the tournament?
✓ France
💡 France topped the FIFA rankings heading into 2026, though their squad had dealt with significant injury concerns and internal reports of disharmony in the build-up months.
42. Which nation were widely considered the biggest dark horse of the 2026 World Cup, having produced a strong qualifying campaign to reach their first finals?
✓ Ecuador
💡 Ecuador's consistent improvement under successive managers made them CONMEBOL's most improved nation over the 2022-2026 cycle, even if their profile remained low internationally.
43. Ahead of the 2026 tournament, which bookmakers' favourite was expected to challenge for the trophy alongside France, Spain, Brazil, and Argentina?
✓ England
💡 England's short odds reflected both genuine squad quality and perhaps an element of host-market optimism from British bookmakers anticipating heavy patriotic betting.
44. Which manager led France into the 2026 World Cup after Didier Deschamps stepped down following Euro 2024?
✓ Thierry Henry
💡 Henry, who had managed Belgium and France's under-23 side, was appointed as a bold, sentimental, and somewhat surprising choice as full senior manager in 2024.
45. Which African nation was widely tipped as a dark horse at 2026, following their historic semi-final run at the Qatar 2022 World Cup?
✓ Morocco
💡 Morocco's 2022 semi-final appearance — the first ever by an African or Arab nation — permanently altered global perceptions of African football's ceiling at a World Cup.
46. True or false: Kylian Mbappé captained France throughout the 2026 World Cup group stage.
✓ True
💡 Mbappé had been named France captain ahead of Euro 2024 and carried the armband into 2026, bearing the weight of a nation's expectations at just 27 years old.
47. Which South American nation, despite being considered dark horses, failed to progress from their group at the 2026 World Cup?
✓ Colombia
💡 Colombia entered 2026 on the back of a Copa América final appearance in 2024, making their group stage exit one of the tournament's more surprising early departures.
48. Which nation's fanbase was described by multiple journalists as the most visible and atmospheric at the 2026 group stage venues across North America?
✓ Mexico
💡 Mexico's diaspora across the United States meant their games often felt like home fixtures regardless of which city they played in, creating extraordinary atmospheres throughout.
49. Which player entered the 2026 World Cup as the reigning FIFA Best Men's Player, having claimed the award in January 2026?
✓ Vinicius Junior
💡 Vinicius Junior's FIFA Best award capped a remarkable personal journey, having spent much of his early career battling racist abuse from stands across European football.
50. Name the 2026 World Cup host city that saw the largest combined attendance across group stage matches, benefiting from its enormous stadium capacity.
✓ New York / New Jersey (MetLife Stadium)
💡 MetLife's 82,500 capacity made it the tournament's largest venue — its NFL sightlines weren't perfect for football, but the atmosphere was reportedly extraordinary.

What strikes me most about the 2026 group stage, looking back at it from a quiz writer's perspective, is how the expanded format genuinely delivered on its promise in some ways while revealing its awkwardness in others. Three-team groups mean two thirds of the field always progress, which takes some of the edge off — there's a reason the old four-team format produced those extraordinary simultaneous final-day scenarios. And yet you'd be a hard person indeed not to have felt something watching Kosovo or Jamaica competing on the sport's biggest stage for the first time. The quiz questions practically write themselves when history is being made in real time, and that, more than anything, is what makes a World Cup year such a joy to cover.
