I have a very clear memory of the exact moment I became the most annoying person at a pub quiz. One thing I noticed while putting this together: science quizzes tend to go down brilliantly with mixed-age groups, much more than you'd expect. Biology is the round where people's confidence tends to peak early and then crater around question five. Everyone feels good about cells and DNA until the questions get specific, and then the room goes quiet in that particular way that means someone is desperately trying to remember something their teacher said once in 2003. This round covers the human body, the natural world, and a few things about living organisms that I genuinely found surprising when I double-checked them.

Chemistry is the great equaliser of science quizzes. It doesn't matter whether you got an A* or scraped through — the periodic table has a way of making everyone feel equally uncertain. This round dips into elements, reactions, and a couple of questions about chemical history that I think will separate the true chemistry enthusiasts from the rest of the table. One of these questions caught me off guard when I was fact-checking, and I'm not too proud to admit it.

This round covers everything from fundamental forces to famous laws, and I've tried to include a couple of questions that reward people who know their physics history, not just their equations.

This is the round that always generates the most noise at a quiz table, and I mean that in the best possible way. Space questions provoke strong opinions, confident wrong answers, and at least one heated debate about Pluto — I've witnessed this at basically every science quiz I've ever been involved with. I've made sure to include some questions that go beyond the basics, because the solar system is genuinely weirder and more interesting than most people realise.

Round 5: Inventions & Discoveries
This is my personal favourite round, and I'll tell you why: it rewards people who pay attention to history as much as science. These questions aren't just about what was invented but who, when, and sometimes in what unexpected circumstances. There are a few answers here that seem obvious until you actually think about them, and at least two where the popular belief and the actual answer are very different things — I'll let you find out which ones.

What I keep coming back to with science quizzes is how often the most interesting answers are the ones that complicate something you thought was settled. The Thomas Edison question is a good example — generations of schoolchildren have been told Edison invented the light bulb, and the reality is messier and more interesting than that. History of science is full of moments like that: contested credit, forgotten contributors, accidents that changed the world. Rosalind Franklin and the DNA discovery is another one that I genuinely think everyone should know more about. If a quiz can send someone away wanting to read a bit more on a topic, I think that's a pretty good outcome for a Tuesday night.
