This is my personal favourite round to write and, frankly, to play. What strikes me every time I put together a post like this is how genuinely enormous the 80s were as a musical decade. It wasn't one thing — it was synthpop and stadium rock and post-punk and the beginnings of hip-hop all colliding at once, and somehow it produced hits that are still getting played at every pub quiz, wedding, and supermarket in the country forty years later. I also think there's something telling about which artists show up repeatedly in these lists: Madonna and Michael Jackson between them could populate an entire quiz post on their own, and yet you still feel like you've barely scratched the surface. That's a remarkable legacy whichever way you look at it.
